Of Dreams and Miracles

She jumped up on her Daddy's lap
Begged him not to go
"Daddy's stay home on Christmas Eve"
Innocence with a red bow

The storm hit hard that winter night
Snow began to fall
Lines were down all over town
Her Daddy was on-call

Squeezed the hand of his worried wife
Hugged his daughter tight
"People count on me sweetheart"
"Please Daddy, not tonight"

Stared into the saddest eyes
Wiped a tiny tear
Placed his hand upon her heart
"Daddy's always here"

He nestled her within the love
of a Mothers warm embrace
Fought to keep from welling up
A smile forced on his face

Jacket, hat, gloves went on
This storm would not soon rest
Just as he had reached the door
He saw his leather vest

Turned and slowly made his way
To the ladies in his life
Draped that weathered piece of hide
'Round his daughter and his wife

"Can't recall a single time
That 'ol vest let me down
So keep it real close to you
'Til I get back from town"

"That vest and I have seen a lot
And yes, it's cracked and worn
The best of all the times we've shared?
The day that you were born"

"I promise, by Christmas night
I'll be here for you
A Biker never breaks his word
A Daddy's love is true"

With a kiss, a wink, an, "I love you"
The front door closed up tight
A mother, a daughter, clutched an 'ol leather vest
Then prayed he'd be alright

On Christmas Eve, a little girl
Sobbed herself to sleep
Somewhere twixt, "I love you Daddy"
And, "Pray the Lord my soul to keep"

Her Mommy tucked her into bed
Then tried to get some rest
One more blanket to keep them warm
Albeit an 'ol leather vest

Headlights crept across the wall
The clock read three a.m.
She felt a chill run through her soul
"Please, let it be him"

Two cups of coffee later
Just as he felt warm
The Sheriff braced himself once more
To face the raging storm

"I'll keep ya posted, as I can
I know it's hard to cope
His crew is searchin' as we speak
Nobody's givin' up hope"

She thanked the Sheriff, closed the door
Fell upon her knees
Raised her head, blindly stared
Humbly uttered, "Please"

Quietly entered her bedroom
Much to her surprise
A small red bow, an 'ol leather vest
and a pair of wide awake eyes

"Mommy, I had a dream
I went on a trip somewhere
It was cold and dark, but I was all right
'Cause I saw Daddy there"

"Daddy smiled and called my name
Then he held my hand
Mommy, why are you crying?
I don't understand"

"Your Daddy loves you very much
So very much, it seems
He told you in a special way
Within your Christmas Dreams"

Hugged her daughter as she wept
Embraced her, vest and all
Again, a chill ran through her soul
As headlights touched the wall

Before she made it to the stairs
The front door opened wide
A Sheriff, a Mother, a Daughter and Daddy
Just stood, stared and cried

"Was trapped beneath a snow bank
Cold and dark as can be
Must've lost it, 'cause I swear
My little girl was there with me"

"I remember calling out her name
Kind of fuzzy as to the rest
The strangest thing that I recall
She was wearing my 'ol leather vest."

"I reached out to hold her hand
Just as she touched mine
I heard 'em yell, We got'em boys
Looks as though he's fine"

A Bikers word? An 'ol leather vest?
One thing for sure, it seems
A Miracle of Christmas
Was born of a little girl's dreams
